How to Bodyboard for Beginners

Bodyboarding is a prominent offshoot of ocean surfing that involves high-speed maneuvers and aerial tricks. Compared to the elongated design of the conventional surfboard, the bodyboard features a compact length and extended width. Bodyboarders utilize a unique riding stance that involves laying your chest across the top of the deck. Most bodyboarders wear a pair of scuba fins for increased maneuverability. According to Saltwater Dreaming, the bodyboard comes in a multitude of sizes to accommodate the weight and stature of beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.

Lower the underside of your bodyboard onto the beach. Insert your feet into a pair of scuba fins that feature a snug yet comfortable fit. Fasten the Velcro strap of the bodyboard leash around the wrist of your dominant hand.

Walk towards the ocean while holding the underside of your bodyboard parallel to the sand. Extend your legs to jump forward as you reach waist-deep water. Align your chest over the top of the bodyboard as the underside makes contact with the water.

Grip the nose of the bodyboard while inserting your fins into the water. Kick your feet to propel the bodyboard past the breaking waves. Rotate your shoulders to point the nose of the bodyboard towards the beach.

Thrust your fins through the water to paddle towards a breaking wave. Lean forward as your bodyboard drops into the wave. Lift your fins out of the water to prevent drag and increase the speed of the board.

Lean onto the long edges of the bodyboard to carve across the face of the breaking wave. Plant your feet in the sand as your bodyboard glides into shallow water. Paddle out past the breaking waves to practice these beginner techniques.
